Vinayak Damodar Savarkar sacrificed his life for the independence of India In Kalapani jail aka Andaman cellular jail. Nowadays people do not stop praising the Gandhi family, but if any member of the family had spent time in Kalapani jail aka Andaman cellular jail this dungeon and got the punishment of Kala Pani, then maybe something else would have happened.
In British rule, the awe of the punishment of Kalapani was
more than hanging and gunshot. Solitary confinement was not the only torture
here, even bigger punishments were there. This was the most difficult work done
by the prisoners here. Many prisoners had died due to this and many had
deteriorated mental balance. Like the bull of crusher, the prisoners were
plowed in it. They were beaten like bulls if they refused to do it. Certainly, this brutality led to a revolt in this prison. Today, where you watch light and
sound shows, other tasks were done there like weaving coconut rope, rope
making, peel tamping, which had to be completed with the set time and goal.
Those who opposed were locked in scornful cells. Apart from
this, prisoners who were sentenced to death were also kept in these rooms until
they were hanged. There was a hanging house in front of these cells and those
prisoners used to see only the hanging house. Veer Savarkar was also kept in
these scornful cells. I became emotional after seeing that heroic martyr's
chamber. This prison was called Kaala Paani which was the synonym of
banishment. It was considered a place from which one could not come back after
going once and he may not be hanged but he had to die there. At that time it
was very difficult to reach this island and only one could go through the
government water ships which were under government control. The Britishers
have two benefits by keeping the prisoners here. Ships coming from Britain to
get stuck in the storm or to stop in the journey could be stopped here, but
only when a permanent colony lives on this island and no one was ready to live here at that time, by
bringing the prisoners it became possible here. When captives arrived here,
then to handle them like soldiers, jailors, and other work people of Britain
and India were brought here. And then a permanent colony was established here.
The first 200 freedom fighters were brought here. In a cruel
punishment, a chain gang was formed to further torture the prisoners here. In
this, many prisoners were kept tied together with the chains day and night. If
these objectives could not be fulfilled here, then jails were also built on
Vipers and Rose Island. Once more than two hundred prisoners tried to escape
from here, most of them died while trying to escape and all those who were
caught were hanged at the same time on the same day. Many times the tribals of here
attacked these colonies and the captives were also killed in them. After many
years, a lot of strikes started and after that when the stories of Andaman
torture started coming out, the protests also started. The food was forced into
their mouths to finish the strike, but still, three political prisoners died.
After a lot of protests, the British government had called back the remaining political prisoners. The practice of banishment ended after that. The construction of this prison was also very beautiful architecture. Tourists are still happy to see that place but our brothers sacrificed to make that place and this Earth was red with their blood. But all this also became possible because the hands of those who tortured our martyrs were not only of the Britishers but also of some disgruntled Indians like Jaichand who had with them.
